A drinks reception, held at The Orangery at Kensington Palace, saw us mingling with a range of guests and enjoying the beautiful surroundings (and delicious finger food!). A keynote speech by a BBC representative addressed the emerging importance of the role of cities in the world – by 2080, some 75% of the world’s population will live in cities! Some of us took the tour of Kensington Palace and learned about the role this plays in the history of the British Monarchy, and we met with a range of people attending the event.

The actual fair itself saw two conference rooms set up with approximately 150 tables, where tourism boards, hoteliers, tour operators and other people from the tourism industry were able to meet with and establish relationships, discuss potential ways to work together and build networks face to face. A lunch was provided, and during this time there was a panel of experts who discussed some of the challenges and opportunities of the tourism industry today. Following the lunch, a further full session of discussion and contracting took place, before a late night flight home to Berlin.

We really care about establishing face to face relationships – the internet serves to connect people, and it’s important to remember that the people it connects are real, with interests, passions and backgrounds that are diverse – just the same as meeting people in a real life, brick and mortar setting. We look at events like CityFair as a great opportunity to meet with people from around the world, and develop relationships that aren’t held together by pixels and bandwidth!

Two month in to our adventure “Berlin Office” we are really, really happy with how things have developed here for us. First and foremost we now have a dedicated customer support team working only on providing top notch German and English support in writing and on the phone.

That frees a lot of resources which we can now put to work on the supplier side and into growing our office: we currently have 15 people working in our office and are still growing in the name of a better end user experience: better customer support, more products, improved response time etc. etc..

But let me talk about how we think a modern workplace should look like and what it looks like here in Berlin for our employees:

• Office times are generally from 9am, but whoever wants to join our breakfast is very welcome to be at the office at 8am already (and customer support starts work as early as 7am)
• We’ll soon have a movie night on every Monday evening to start off the week in a nice and friendly atmosphere
• We often have lunch together in a big group at the nearby White Trash Fast Food Restaurant. If that’s not the case and we go out in smaller groups, then there are a lot of Italian, Arabian and German and Asian places right around the corner
• Every Friday after work we are all having pizza and beers together and have a laugh or talk in our lounge area
• Every Friday (coming soon) during our Pizza night we will have presentations and will have a quick talk about whatever happened this week
• To those who need some physical exercise we offer a splendid, wooden football table

Also we have started to do some real work in marketing and all the other departments. From now on we will be more visible and interactive online and every employee can be reached for example through twitter. We think in today’s world we need to go where the people are and not the other way around. So from now on you can reach us trough various national telephone land lines (which will always be displayed at the top of our homepage), twitter, facebook and obviously still very popular – through email.

We blogged about our plans to branch out to Berlin earlier, which we are proud to announce today:

We’ve had the opportunity to move into a nice office in the end of December 2010 in the very center of Berlin. Since then we did all kind of things to set up a startup environment like settting up insurances, telephone system, Internet etc.

The office is located right in the center of Berlin’s old town surrounded by the Alexanderplatz, the Rosenthaler Platz with its extended eating possibilities and the geekmeet par excellence St. Oberholz as well as the once popular Kastanienallee.

As a bonus there is the Alte Schönhauser Strasse leading right up to the office’s entrance with a plethora of fancy shopping possibilities and great Asian food like Monsieur Vuong and YamYam.

Now, with the sofas and the football table in place we’re ready to take on startup and travelling enthusiasts in the following arenas:

Actually we’re experiencing web 2.0 globalization: a common event in Spain organized by young people found its way to Switzerland through facebook.

the text above is really unique and cool, as Philipe wrote it on his iPhone, while having a beer in the other hand. As said above, it was extremely remarkable to see what social communities can do. Obviously many people will complain about this Facebook event and for sure there will be another “young people are much worse than 25 years ago” debate. However, to me it is more of a sign that people are actually eager to come together and celebrate, which is in itself a very positive purpose. Seeing the crowd dancing and having fun, I really couldn’t understand why so many respected officials called the attending people “brain sickos” (hahaha!). But I guess it is always fantastic, if you can complain about something in order to not have to deal with your own boring life.

In any case, we had lots of fun (and some beers) and got to talk to a bunch of different people. I would be ready for another Botellon next weekend and am definitely looking forward to see more community organized meetings in the future. Prost!

Last week our team did a phenomenal excursion and booked the tour “Rafting Inn” by Swissraftadventures in Scuol / Engadin. What a phenomenal ride!!! The water on the Inn was quite high due to strong rainfall the days before, so we really cruised down the Inn pretty fast. Kyle however, our awesome Rafting Guide from San Francisco, had the situation under control at any point and even made us laugh while being almost half way over board . Thanks so much Kyle, we loved it!!!

To all others I can only recommend to take a look at our pictures, get envious and drive down to Scuol yourself. It is surely worth it!
